The Illinois Department of Insurance published a news release asking insurers to provide relief to insureds who are affected by the government shutdown.

The government has been shut down since October 1, 2025, meaning that over 153,000 Illinois federal workers have not been receiving a paycheck, at not fault of their own. The Department asks that insurers provide relief to residents who may be facing financial hardship.

Auto and homeowner insurers are asked to place a moratorium on cancellations and nonrenewals that occurred on or after October 1, 2025, due to non-payment of premium. They are asked to provide at least a 30 day premium grace period or for as long as the shutdown continues.

Insurers are also asked to provide a 30 day extension for repairs to consumers who indicate the repairs can’t be done within the time required by the policy. The policy should not be cancelled due to condition of the property while repairs are being made.
