The Colorado Division of Insurance published a news release asking insurers to give a premium grace period to federal workers affected by the government shutdown.

The government has been shut down since October 1, 2025, and federal workers are either furloughed or will not receive their paycheck during the shutdown. There are 57,000 federal workers in Colorado, many of whom may be facing financial hardship. Policies should not lapse due to a temporary situation that is out of the policyholder’s control.

Insurance Commissioner Conway urges insurers to give a grace period of 30 days for premium payments to federal workers who can’t make their payments due to the shutdown. Insurers are also asked not to assess late fees and penalties, or cancellations due to late payments. Insurers should also communicate to policyholders all available options.
