The Missouri Department of Commerce & Insurance published a bulletin announcing a moratorium on nonrenewals and cancellations of residential property policies that were damaged by storms this year.

The Department reasons that repairs after a disaster can be delayed for many reasons outside of an insured’s control, such as limited supplies or a lack of contractors. Insureds should be given reasonable time to make repairs before insurers take underwriting actions.

The directive applies to any residential property within the state that suffered a storm or weather loss after March 1, 2025. If an insurer has already cancelled or nonrenewed a property that is subject to the moratorium, they must take necessary actions to ensure the policy remains in force.

The moratorium does not apply to properties not damaged by this year’s storms and to policies cancelled due to non-payment of premium.
