The Washington Office of the Insurance Commissioner published a bulletin asking insurers to give a premium grace period to federal workers for auto, renters, and homeowners insurance.

This comes following the government shutdown on October 1, 2025. Federal workers will not receive their paycheck during the shutdown. Almost 80,000 federal workers are in Washington state, many of whom may be facing financial hardship.

Insurance Commissioner Patty Kuderer asks insurers to give a minimum grace period of 30 days for federal workers who can’t make their payments due to the shutdown. Insurers are also asked not assess late fees and penalties, or cancellations due to late payments. Policies should not lapse due to a temporary situation that is out of the policyholder’s control.

The bulletin can be found here.
