The Maine Bureau of Insurance published a bulletin providing an overview of the 2025 legislative changes that affect the insurance industry. These acts were added during the First Regular Session of the 132nd Legislature.
An Act to Increase Storm Preparedness for Maine’s Communities, Homes and Infrastructure: This act creates the Home Resiliency Program, which will provide grants to Maine residents to go toward roof replacements and other protections against storms and floods. The program is modeled after similar programs in other states and aims to meet building standards developed by the IBHS.
An Act to Strengthen the Requirements for Medical Payments Coverage: This act makes it so medical payments coverage found in auto insurance is assignable only by a written agreement between the insured and the insurer on a form prescribed by or approved by the Superintendent of Insurance.
An Act to Align Intrastate Commercial Motor Vehicle Insurance Requirements with Federal
Standards: This act adds a section to the financial responsibility requirements for commercial motor vehicles in the state and requires that intrastate commercial motor vehicles carry a combined single limit of $750,000. This applies to commercial motor vehicle policies executed, delivered, continued, or renewed in Maine on or after January 1, 2026. Other requirements within the state and for every state can be found here: Table of Limits: Financial Responsibility for Commercial Motor Vehicles.
The bulletin also discusses health insurance changes and can be found here.
