A pair of brothers were arraigned on felony insurance fraud charges after an investigation by the California Department of Insurance. The one brother falsely reported a claim to his insurer for a solo-collision loss to his 2020 Bentley Continental GT. The man stated his brother had borrowed the vehicle and had an accident. What actually happened was that the vehicle had been rented out through the man’s exotic rental car company, and a renter had an accident in the vehicle three days earlier than the reported date of accident. Sheriff’s deputies responded to the renter’s accident scene and body cameras documented the vehicle’s damage. The renter filed a claim with his insurer but that claim was denied due to lack of collision coverage.

The owner of the vehicle then filed a fraudulent claim with his insurer, going so far as to stage photos of the vehicle with a tow truck near the supposed accident location. During the investigation it was discovered that the damage shown in the submitted photos matched the damage shown in the sheriff’s body camera footage documenting the renter’s accident. Further investigation showed that the brother provided a false statement to the insurer to support his brother’s fraudulent claim.
