A man pled guilty to filing a fraudulent insurance claim, which is a gross misdemeanor, after investigations by the Criminal Investigations Unit (CIU). The man hired a carpet cleaner to clean his carpets at his dwelling. The next day he filed a claim against the company’s insurer for damage to a wall and a painting. He provided the insurer with an estimate for repairs and photos of the damage. The company listed on the estimate stated that the document was forged, and that the photos of the supposed damage were readily found on the internet. The claim was denied and referred to the CIU for investigation. The man received a suspended sentence and was ordered to serve 80 hours of community service, serve 24 months’ probation, and pay $500 in court fees.
