The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) published a press release in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. They are extending the renewal period for National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policyholders in states impacted by Hurricane Helene.

The renewal dates have passed for some NFIP policyholders in several states affected by the hurricane. These policyholders are given an extended renewal period and will have a chance to renew their policy so there is no lapse in coverage.

Typically, there is a 30-day renewal grace period. Policyholders who had flood damage will now have until November 26, 2024, to renew their policy. This applies to policies that were set to expire on August 28, 2024, or after, and applies to policyholders in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

In addition, advance payments of up to $20,000 may be available prior to a visit from an adjuster. Policyholders should contact their insurance company to inquire. The proof of loss requirement is also extended from the usual 60 days to 120 days from the date of loss. Finally, NFIP Direct and FEMA's Write Your Own insurance company partners are authorized to pay claims based on an adjuster's report without the requirement of a signed proof of loss.
