Fraud of the Week
Auto Fraud – Iowa
Amount – $10,142.47
A woman pled guilty and was sentenced on one count of felony insurance fraud. She had been driving erratically and a police officer tried to pull her over. She fled and the officer had to use a precision immobilization technique to stop the vehicle. She was arrested at the time for felony eluding a law enforcement officer and DUI. She later filed a claim with her auto insurance company claiming her vehicle was struck by a hit-and-run driver, and failed to mention her interaction with the police. When a friend tried to negotiate a larger claim settlement with the insurer and indicated that it was involved in a police pursuit, the claim was denied. She was sentenced to four years in prison which was suspended to four years of probation. She was ordered to pay $937 in restitution, complete 100 hours of community, and 240 days of discretionary jail time.
