Fraud of the Week

Vehicle Fraud – Idaho

Amount – $3-4,000

A man has been sentenced to three years in prison, (one year fixed), suspended. He was placed on three years of supervised felony probation, ordered 40 hours of community service, a healthy thinking class, a $500 fine and restitution of $204 to the Idaho Department of Insurance. The man made a claim to his insurance company for damages to his recently purchased vehicle, claiming that a deer had struck the vehicle. However, photos from the online auction where he purchased the vehicle showed that the vehicle had preexisting damage that matched the reported damage from the supposed deer. When questioned by the insurer, he claimed there was no preexisting damage and that he had filed a police report for the accident with the deer. The police department had no record of any report. The claim was denied and turned over to the department of insurance for further investigation.
