A man pled guilty to third-degree theft after an investigation by the Criminal Investigations Unit (CIU) into his auto claim. The man was in an accident but did not have any insurance. He bought a policy later that day and filed a claim the following day for the loss that occurred prior to the policy being in force. The insurer investigated the claim and discovered that the police had the accident on file before the policy had been purchased. The claim was denied and turned over to the CIU for further investigation.
