Fraud of the Week
Wildfire Fraud – California
Amount – Unknown
A company had been sending misleading mailers to the homes of California residents soliciting business for disaster recovery and giving false information. The company advised that funds were available through the State of California, that there would be no impact on the homeowners' policies since the fires had been declared a disaster, that there would be no claims against the homeowners' policies, and other misinformation. The company also filed claims without the knowledge of some homeowners and the company listed itself as payee on some of the submitted claims. Representatives of the company also canvassed neighborhoods looking for customers, but they were not licensed by the Department. Department investigators discovered the fraudulent activity and the company has been shut down. The owner of the company has been banned.
