Homeowners Fraud – Iowa
Amount – $39,330
After submitting false statements and documents to an insurer, a couple pleaded guilty to filing false documents to an insurer with the woman pleading guilty to one count of Fraudulent Submission to Insurer which is a Class D Felony in the state. The couple was displaced from their residence due to a storm and stayed with their family for free. However, they fabricated and submitted 34 receipts to their insurer for a bed and breakfast they supposedly stayed at during the displacement, and received $39,330 in insurance funds. After pleading guilty, the man received deferred judgment, was placed on supervised probation for no more than three years, was ordered to pay $39,330 in restitution and pay a $1,025 civil fine. The woman also received a deferred judgment and was placed on supervised probation for no more than three years and was also ordered to pay a civil penalty of $1,025.
