Two attorneys and a physician worked together to operate an enormous trip-and-fall scheme between 2013 and 2018. They would recruit vulnerable individuals who were poor, homeless, or drug addicts, guide them through making or staging various trip and fall claims, and then filing the claims and suits for the supposed patients. Some patients were instructed to undergo unnecessary surgeries in order to make the claims look better. Hundreds of lawsuits were filed and almost 300 unnecessary surgeries were performed on the recruited patients. One attorney and the physician were convicted of mail fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, and were sentenced to 102 months in prison. They were also sentenced to three years of supervised release. The attorney was ordered to pay $4,774,709 in forfeiture and the physician was ordered to pay $2,900,905. The other attorney pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and was sentenced to 24 months in prison. He was ordered to pay $995, 281.54 in forfeiture.
