Fraud of the Week
Rate Evasion – Pennsylvania/New York
Amount – Unspecified
A Pennsylvania man is facing fraud charges for allowing his cousin to use his address to insure his vehicle when the cousin actually lived in New York City, where auto insurance premiums are much higher. After the insurance was purchased the cousin had an auto accident in New York City and claimed to be visiting a cousin at the time. Upon investigating the claim the insurer discovered that the car had been owned by the cousin in New York before the title and tags were transferred to the cousin in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania resident did not see the accident with the vehicle, but the New York resident did, and the man stated that he bought the insurance because policies are cheaper in Pennsylvania than they are in New York. The New York resident stated that he had the vehicle most of the time and that the Pennsylvania cousin used it while visiting.
