The Connecticut Insurance Department has observed that insurers in some states are refusing to provide coverage or are increasing rates for certain models of Hyundais and Kias due to the increased thefts of these vehicles. The department has therefore issued a notice reminding insurers that all carriers providing coverage for private passenger nonfleet autos are to file their underwriting rules and any modifications of those rules used in determining the eligibility of autos with the department. Unless allowed by the department, rules may not be effective for at least 30 days from the date of filing. New or revised private passenger auto rates must also be filed with the department.
Insurers are advised that if the company has taken any action regarding coverage for the Hyundai and Kia models in question without having filed the action appropriately, the insurer is to immediately stop such actions and advise the department of plans to address the situation with insureds. The department directs any questions concerning actions regarding coverage for the affected Hyundais and Kias or underwriting rule filing requirements to George Bradner Assistance Deputy Commissioner & Director Property and Casualty Division at (860) 297-3866 or via email at [email protected]
2/24/2023 Update:
In an email just released from the Insurance Department, the department advises that no insurers have taken the required steps to stop offering coverage for these vehicles or to increase rates. If any insurers have taken such actions, they are required to stop immediately and contact the department in order to discuss plans addressing affected policyholders and consumers. Owners of Kias or Hyundais who have received notices from their insurers that changes are being made to their auto insurance are advised to contact the department immediately. A copy of the notice is available here.
