Crop Insurance Fraud – South Dakota

A father and son have been convicted of False Statements in Connection with Federal Crop Insurance. They claimed that they planted 2,200 acres of sunflowers and that the entire crop failed. The following year son claimed that he planted 47.5 acres of corn that also failed. In reality, none of these crops were ever planted and the men collected more than $1.3 million from the insurance company. The father has been sentenced to 18 months in prison followed by two years of supervised release and ordered to pay $1,045,544 in restitution. The son was sentenced to 24 months in prison followed by two years of supervised release and ordered to pay $279,396 in restitution.
