Fraud of the Week

Business Auto – California

Amount – unknown

A businessman claimed that his vegan food truck was the victim of multiple burglaries and vandalism attacks, and was eventually burned down completely. He filed a claim with his insurer and set up a GoFundMe account which raised over $102,000; he received another $20,000 from the Sycuan Indian tribe. An investigation has led to the man being charged with both arson and insurance fraud, and the funds raised by the GoFundMe account put him at risk of an additional grand theft charge. So far he has pleaded not guilty to the arson and insurance fraud charge and faces seven years in prison if convicted.
