Fraud of the Week
Homeowners and Auto Arson – Minnesota
Amount – $300,000+
An insured falsely claimed that someone had sprayed graffiti on his garage door and set fire to his camper. He submitted claims to his insurance company for fire damage to the garage door, residence, camper, and vehicles totaling more than $300,000. When the insurer denied some of the claims, the insured threatened to report the company to the Department of Commerce and the Attorney General. He also created a GoFundMe account to receive funds from others. He received $61,000 from the insurance company and more than $17,000 from the GoFundMe account. He pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and a sentencing hearing will be held at a later time.
