Fraud of the Week – Repeat Offender Blames Phantom

Auto Fraud – North Carolina

Amount – Unknown

A woman who was already on the hook for multiple traffic-related offenses has been arrested for filing a false auto claim. She claimed a phantom driver ran her off the road causing her to strike multiple stationary objects when in fact no other vehicle was involved in the accident. Her bond of $50,000 for the fraud was reduced to $3,000 after she provided her photograph and fingerprints. Prior to her arrest for insurance fraud, the woman was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving with an expired license and expired tag, and faces charges of assaulting a government official and resisting a peace officer in a separate incident. In 2019 she was convicted of reckless driving.
