Fraud of the Week

Auto Fraud – California

Amount – Unknown

A police officer was involved in an auto accident, told the other party that his vehicle was uninsured, and collected money from that party for the damages to his vehicle. He then filed a claim with his insurance company and had claimed to be a sergeant on the application for coverage. During the investigation of the claim, the police internal affairs department was notified of his fraudulent behavior. Investigators determined that representing that the vehicle was uninsured and taking money from the victim constituted theft by false pretense. An arrest warrant was issued and he voluntarily turned himself in.
