In September 2017, an insured set fire to his vehicle and made a claim against his auto policy. His insurer paid him almost $19,000. In July 2021, the same insured set fire to a boat and tampered with evidence before filing another fraudulent claim, which was not paid. The man has been indicted for two counts of burning personal property to defraud an insurer, felony theft by deception, misdemeanor attempted theft by deception, and tampering with evidence.
