Fraud of the Week

Homeowners Fraud – West Virginia

Amount – $13,000+

A man purchased a house for $5,000. The man applied for insurance with $285,500 in property coverage, $142,750 for contents, and $14,275  for other structures. On the application he listed the purchase price of the home as $50,000. A few months after he purchased the house, he arranged with other individuals for them to burn the house so he could collect the insurance proceeds. The house was burned to the ground in August 2019. The carrier spent more than $13,000 investigating the claim before denying coverage.

The man pleaded guilty to wire fraud and faces up to 20 years in prison at his sentencing in mid-July.
