Fraud of the Week
Homeowners fraud – Florida
Amount – Unknown
Two scam roofers have been arrested for perpetrating the familiar roofing scam where homeowners are encouraged to submit a roofing claim to their insurer with the promise that a rebate will cover the homeowner's deductible. The men started running the scams after Hurricane Irma tore through the state. The men allegedly instructed their sales team to solicit insureds to file a claim with the promise of getting them a new roof without having to pay the deductible. Homeowners who agreed had to sign over their insurance claim rights to the company, place a sign in their yard advertising the roofing company, post positive reviews of the company online, and give referrals in exchange for a rebate or credit towards the deductible amount.
The men face nine felony counts of false and fraudulent insurance claims and each face a maximum sentence of up to a $45,000 fine and up to 45 years in prison. Bond for one of the men has been set at $45,000.
