Fraud of the Week
Auto Fraud – New York
Amount – $100 million
A pair of criminal gangs bribed 911 operators, hospital employees and others in order to get information on car crash victims, who they then contacted and steered to particular medical providers who performed unneeded medical procedures and then overbilled the insurers for those procedures. One group took in $30 million between 2014 and 2021 steering victims to medical centers they controlled, and had an attorney on payroll who laundered hundreds of thousands of dollars through his firm. The other group ran from 2008 to 2021, and again ran medical clinics with doctors who ordered and performed unnecessary medical procedures and overcharged insurers. They took in $70 million over the years. The organizers face 42 and 37 years in prison respectively.
