Fraud of the Week
Homeowner fraud – North Carolina
Amount – $22,994
A woman submitted a claim that she sustained a fire in her kitchen to her insurance carrier. She received $22,994 for a fire that never actually occurred, and the documents she submitted to verify the claim were fraudulent. Later she obtained coverage from a different carrier and submitted a claim for water damage to clothing and a television set. However, the actual date of loss was before the policy was obtained by the insured. She was arrested and released on $10,000 bond. She has been indicted on two counts of insurance fraud, one count of obtaining property by false pretenses and one count of attempting to obtain property by false pretenses.
