Fraud of the Week
Jewelry Claim – Florida
Amount – $22,000
A man has been arrested for insurance fraud and organized fraud for recruiting a friend to obtain renters insurance, add a diamond ring to the policy and then claim the ring had been lost or stolen. The man used photos of his wife's diamond ring and created fake appraisals to give to the insurer. In August 2018 the first claim for the ring was filed, and then a second claim for the ring was filed in December of 2018. The insurer realized the claims involved similar photos, facts of loss, and identical descriptions of the ring in the appraisal documents. Upon investigation, it was verified that the appraisals were fake and that no appraisals had been created. The investigation also discovered that the ring belonged to the first man's wife and that he developed the scheme to defraud the insurer because the insurer refused him a promotion. He has been arrested and charged with grand theft, faking insurance supporting documents, organized fraud, insurance conspiracy, and insurance fraud. If convicted, he faces up to forty years in prison.
