Fraud of the Week
Producer Fraud – California
Amount: $20,000+
A former insurance producer has pleaded guilty to felony grand theft for embezzling $20,000 of premium payments from customers. She collected premium payments from customers and credited the accounts with the payments, but instead of depositing the funds in the premium account for the carrier, she pocketed the funds. She would occasionally deposit personal checks into the premium account to cover what she had not deposited, but many of those checks bounced. She has admitted to "borrowing" some funds from the premium account and stated she intended to pay it back. Her producer license expired in September of 2020, and the insurance department is in the process of starting an administrative action so that she cannot reinstate her producer's license.
