Fraud of the Week
Property fraud – New York
Amount: $200,000+
A New York woman pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud that involved submitting false claims to a cell phone insurance company. The woman and her conspirators would submit false claims pretending to be legitimate cell phone customers, and filed claims for lost, damaged, or stolen cell phones using falsified driver's licenses and having replacement phones sent to various addresses that she and her conspirators collected the phones from. More than 100 replacement cell phones were sent to the woman and her accomplices, and total losses to the company exceeded $200,000. She faces a maximum of twenty years in prison and a $250,000 fine or twice the gain or loss from the offense, whichever is greater.
