I have come across a business income policy that provides coverage for damage "caused by or resulting from…" I was wondering if you are aware of any writings on the difference between "caused by" and "resulting from?". I would like to see something clarifying the difference, if any.

We have a complete analysis of the Business Income and Extra Expense Coverage form where the caused by and resulting from language is discussed. Basically, caused by would require that the loss or damage be a direct cause of a covered cause of loss, while resulting from would require that the loss or damage be a direct result of the covered cause of loss.

For example, a lightning strike cuts out the power to the building – the lightning strike is the direct cause of the loss of power; while if the lightning strike causes a fire to the building then the fire is a resulting from the lightning strike.
