Fraud of the Week
Forged Documents – Auto claim – California
Amount – $2237.00
A California man was arraigned on charges of felony insurance fraud and forgery for allegedly providing an altered auto repair receipt and bank statement to his insurance company in relation to a damage claim on his vehicle.
The vehicle had been damaged while parked and unattended. The repair estimate from the shop was for $2237. The man offered to pay in cash, and the shop agreed to do the work for $1,200. The man then submitted the original repair estimate of $2237 to his insurance company for payment. The insurer had concerns about the receipt and contacted the body shop, which explained that the $2237 was the repair estimate and that the man had paid $1200 for the repairs. The shop provided the insurer documentation of the payments. Documents provided to the insurer by the man in question supporting his claims appeared to have been altered and the claim was not paid. The man has surrendered to the sheriff's office.
