The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, (OIR) has issued an emergency order, directing that insurers may not cancel or nonrenew personal or commercial residential property insurance policies which cover a dwelling or residential property damaged by or as a result of Hurricane Sally. The property must be located in a listed county. Insurers must wait 90 days after the insured property or dwelling has been repaired before canceling or nonrenewing the policy.

The order applies to all property and casualty insurers, premium finance companies, surplus lines insurers, and all other property and casualty entities regulated by the OIR.

Due to Hurricane Sally, several counties in northwest Florida were in a state of emergency starting September 16. Two weeks later the Governor amended the original state of emergency and added several other counties. Hurricane Sally dumped 30 inches of rain, or four months of rain from the Florida Panhandle to Mobile Bay, Alabama in four hours.
