Fraud of the Week
Arson – Florida
Amount – Unknown
A Florida firefighter set his house on fire in order to collect from the insurance company only to be caught because he kept changing his story. First he said he was upstairs when the fire started, then said he was there when flames broke out, then said he was adding gas to a running generator which caused a sudden flash and the garage to catch fire, and he ran upstairs to get his phone. Responders noted that he had no burns on his clothes or hair, and that neighbors called 911 before the homeowner did. The insured had tried to sell the home two years earlier with no success, and the home was insured for $100,000 above its appraised value. He has been charged with arson of a dwelling and burning to defraud an insurer.
