Fraud of the Week
Unlicensed company – California
Amount – $2.1 million
The California Department of Insurance fined a self-storage company $250,000 for offering and selling more than $2.1 million to renters with an insurance license. Between October 2018 and July 2019, the company sold approximately 19,500 insurance policies to renters without an insurance license from the department. The company charged more than $2.1 million for coverage and kept $1.8 million as operating fees. Buyers were not informed that they were paying high fees to the company for insurance that actually cost much less.
