The Fine Art of Rate Evasion

Fraud of the Week

Auto Fraud – New York

Unknown

A New York woman lied on her auto insurance application and claimed she lived in Berks County, New York. In reality, she lived in Queens Village, an area that generated higher premiums. She claimed to be living with a relative. In 2018 her husband was involved in an accident in the city and the woman stated he was visiting a friend. When asked, at first she stated she did not know where her husband lived, but later indicated that he lives and works in New York but had her permission to use the car and that he was taking it to New Jersey for repairs. Investigators determined that her husband was working and staying in New York four or five days a week, and her tax forms from 2012 and 2013 confirmed her address in Queens. License plates on the vehicle were scanned in the city between 2014 and 2019. Currently she is free on $5,000 bail.
