On December 18 Commissioner Lara issued a moratorium on nonrenewals for residential property policies for residents in or near areas threatened by wildfires. The moratorium lasts for one year and is predicated on a declared state of emergency by the governor for the specific area. The moratorium is specific to nonrenewals based on the location of the insured property within an area that sustained a wildfire. Other reasons for nonrenewal are not impacted.

To determine the areas impacted, the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, in conjunction with the Office of Emergency Services, will provide the commissioner with data describing the fire perimeter so that the commissioner can determine what zip codes are impacted.
