Fraud of the Week
Auto Fraud – New York
Amount: Unknown
A police officer for the Town of Tonawanda, whose employment has been suspended, pleaded not guilty to charges of falsifying business records and insurance fraud arising from a car crash early this year. The fraudster falsely claimed his wife was driving at the time of the crash, which involved an Uber vehicle. At the scene, the investigating officers failed to question the Uber driver who could have told them that he was driving the vehicle, not his wife. The fraudster was actually driving the vehicle. At the time of the incident, the fraudster was a police officer and a member of the department SWAT team. Despite pleading not guilty to both crimes, the fraudster admits lying to the police the night of the accident, and the insurance company the day after the accident. A corrected accident report states that the fraudster was driving.
