Presenting a False Claim—South Carolina

A South Carolina man was found guilty of insurance fraud and sentenced to ten years in prison. In 2014 the individual stripped parts off of a codefendant's 2007 Cadillac Escalade. The insured parked the vehicle in an abandoned parking lot and called a tow company reporting transmission problems. When the tow company found the vehicle, it was stripped. The insured made a police report of vandalism and submitted a claim to his carrier for the damage. When the vehicle was taken to the repair shop, the individual who had stripped the parts tried to have them put back on the vehicle as if they were new parts.
