Internet-connected and driverless cars could be targets for hackers so the auto industry must ensure vehicles have built-in cyber security protection, a top U.S. Justice Department official said.
Hackers linked to the Iranian government launched cyber-attacks on some four dozen U.S. financial institutions and a flood-control dam above New York City in forays meant to undermine U.S. markets and national security.
The U.S. Defense Department is sending personnel on tours with private cyber security companies and bringing in specialists from those companies to gain the skills necessary to defend military networks from hackers.
The fingerprint records of about 5.6 million current and former federal workers, contractors and job applicants were stolen in the breach of the U.S. Office of Personnel Managements computer system, up from an initial estimate of 1.1 million.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV waited 18 months to tell federal safety regulators about a security flaw in radios being installed more than a million vehicles that hackers later exploited to seize control of a Jeep last month.
Some investigators suspect the attacks were part of a sweeping campaign to create a database on Americans that could be used to obtain commercial and government secrets.
The U.S. governments human resources director resigned Friday, a day after disclosing that hackers stole personal data for more than 22 million people from her agency in one of the worst security breaches in history.
