Each year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) announces the vehicles that qualify for their Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ award. These awards have been around since 2006 and 2013, respectively, and are given to vehicles that rate the highest for safety within size categories for a given year.

In 2022, in order to qualify as a Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must have earned a rating of "good" in the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, original side, roof strength and head restraint tests; an "advanced" or "superior" rating for available front crash prevention for both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations; and have headlights available that rate as "acceptable" or "good."
