An Oregon man will be serving 65 months in federal prison and paying a large fine for aggravated theft and wirefraud as part of an insurance fraud scheme.

The wrongful actions of Timothy Devon Huntley, Jr., 45, werediscovered by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB).Investigators discovered multiple suspicious insurance claims withwhich he was associated, and the case was passed along to theFinancial Crimes Unit of the Eugene, Ore. Police Department, thecity in which Huntley resided.

Once arrested, one of the things Huntley admitted to involvedobtaining insurance policies for recently acquired used vehicles with fake names, addresses, etc., as well asthose of real people. Soon after acquiring a policy, Huntley wouldclaim to have damaged a parked car with the vehicle. However, thedamaged parked vehicle would also be his, whether insured under areal or fake name. Huntley would then pose as the owner of thedamaged car and collect the insurance payout.

Investigation revealed that Huntley had filed over 20 fraudulentclaims with at least 11 different insurance companies. The lossesthese companies suffered totaled $196,854.20—and that is now theamount of money Huntley now owes in restitution.

This was not Huntley's first run-in with the law. He has over 20prior convictions, according to public records, including at least10 prior felony convictions for offenses including forgery in thefirst degree, robbery in the third degree, hindering prosecution,and more.

Huntley had pled guilty to aggravated theft and wire fraud March 15 of this year, and was kept infederal custody until his August 2 sentencing.
