The Hawaii Insurance Division published a declaration authorizing the temporary use of nonresident independent adjusters due to Hurricane Lala. Nonresident independent adjusters will be allowed to operate in the state to facilitate the amount of work needed due to Hurricane Lala to ensure that insurance companies can timely respond to property owners' claims.

Nonresident independent adjusters are allowed to operate without a license for up to 120 days from the date of registration if the following criteria are met:

  1. The adjuster provides a copy of their current license in another state with licensing requirements similar to Hawaii's requirements;
  2. Within three working days of the commencement of work by a nonresident adjuster, an insurance company, independent adjusting company, or producer that is using the nonresident adjuster shall provide to the Commissioner on its letterhead the following information:
  3. Name of the nonresident adjuster;
  4. Nonresident adjuster's Hawaii mailing address and business address and phone numbers;
  5. Nonresident adjuster's permanent home and business addresses and phone numbers.

Nonresident independent adjusters have 30 days from today to register to operate in Hawaii unless the time is extended by the commissioner. An insurance company, independent adjusting company or producer should use the Emergency Independent Adjuster Form to provide information as required.

The document should be sent by email to [email protected] or by mail to the following address:

Hawaii Insurance Division
Licensing Branch
335 Merchant Street, Room 213
Honolulu, HI 96813

The declaration does not apply to nonresident public adjusters, unless the commissioner later determines that there is a need for additional public adjusters.

The declaration may be found here.
