The Texas Department of Insurance published a news release providing guidance to residents suffering from flood damage.

Homeowners who have flood insurance are advised to file a claim as soon as possible. NFIP policies require the policyholder to file a claim within 60 days of the damage. Homeowners with a policy with NFIP can call 877-336-2627.

Homeowners are advised that most homeowners policies don't cover flood damage, but many will cover damage from wind or fallen trees and damage to fences. Homeowners should take photos or videos of the damage when it is safe to do so.

For auto policies, flood damage is covered if the policyholder has comprehensive coverage. Policyholders are also advised to take photos or videos of the damage when it is safe to do so. Insureds should speak to a mechanic before trying to dry their car.
