The cover story of the December 2015 issue of the ABA Journal, “Badly Burned: Long-held beliefs about arson science have been debunked after decades of misuse,” should be read by every lawyer and corporate executive involved in insurance coverage disputes where arson is or may be at issue.

Among other things, the article quotes Case Western Reserve University law professor Paul Giannelli as saying, “Although the science exists to debunk these lingering fire investigation myths, this kind of junk science continues to enter courtrooms through the testimony of some fire investigators who continue to ignore the science behind fire and rely on the 'art' of arson investigation.”
