An acting superintendent has been named to succeed Benjamin M. Lawsky, Superintendent of the New York Department of Financial Services (“NYDFS”), the New York agency that regulates insurance companies and banks.

Anthony Albanese, Superintendent Lawsky's chief of staff, has gotten the nod.

Mr. Albanese joined the DFS in 2011. Before that, he was a partner at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP.

In a letter to his staff announcing the appointment, Superintendent Lawsky said, “I know that under his leadership DFS will continue all of the important initiatives we have under way while also continuing to be a smart, modern, and forward-thinking prudential regulator.”

New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo is conducting a search for a permanent replacement for Superintendent Lawsky, who reportedly will be opening a law and consulting firm.
