XL Group has appointed Daniel O'Connell to write war, terrorism, and political violence cover.

Neil Robertson, chief executive global specialty, XL Group said, “This is a significant appointment for XL Group. As companies invest and operate in countries and territories prone to political instability, they are increasingly looking to insurers to provide cover for their people and assets. Daniel, in his new role, will be providing solutions that respond to these fast changing and evolving risks.”

XL Group's crisis management team offers product recall and war, terrorism, and political violence cover, and it is the group's intention to develop kidnap and ransom and personal accident products for corporate clients. These products will be available globally and will be written out of three hubs: London, Singapore, and New York.

Mr. O'Connell has a military background reaching the rank of captain in the British Army and has served in Germany, Iraq, and Northern Ireland. He joins XL Group from Hiscox, where he worked underwriting war, terrorism, and political violence from 2011.

Prior to this, he had various roles at Willis Limited, Global Markets International, including terrorism team leader (divisional director, executive director) and accident and health team leader (executive director).

At XL Group Mr. O'Connell reports to Stephen Ashwell, chief underwriting officer, who joined XL Group earlier in the year to head up the company's new crisis management team.
