The insurance industry has long made an effort to recruit veterans, but some P&C insurance carriers make it easier for vets to settle into a career than others, according to the latest employer rankings from Military Friendly®, a website that collects and assesses resources for former military personnel. This year, eight P&C insurance companies made the annual Military Friendly® list of top employers for veterans. (A few health insurance carriers also made the list but aren't included in our roundup.) The goal of this list is to identify businesses and organizations "whose commitment to serving the military and veteran community is comprehensive in scope and meaningful in terms of actual outcomes and impact." Why might an insurance carrier or insurance-related business want to recruit and hire veterans? For one thing, many insurers are involved in military-related charities; hiring veterans serves to underscore that commitment to people who've served in the armed forces. Veterans also are associated with a variety of skills and characteristics — including the ability to collaborate, lead, learn quickly and follow through on goals — that can enable an insurance professional to build a lasting, successful and fulfilling insurance career. Military Friendly® puts potential employers into categories that include:
- Top 10: "… the guidon bearers for military/veteran programs and initiatives. They set the standard for other designations and are programs that continue to improve every year."
- Gold: "… an employer who scored within 10% of the 10th ranking employer in their category. These employers are setting an example with their programs and initiatives."
- Silver: "… companies who meet the requirements and score within 20% of the 10th ranking Employer in their category. Only a select group of companies achieve this honor."
- Bronze: "… an employer who scored within 30% of the 10th best employer in their category. These employers have exceptional military/veteran programs and this award showcases their dedication."
- Designated Military Friendly: "… awarded to companies who meet the requirements in the methodology section above. They are committed to being better for veterans and are an example to American companies."
