Chicago has a hunger problem. One in five households in the metro area experience food insecurity, including one in four families with children, according to data from Northwestern University.

More than 40 years ago, Beyond Hunger was founded to combat this issue. Beyond Hunger recognizes that beating hunger takes more than just delivering food. The team serves over 40,000 food-insecure individuals across 13 ZIP codes throughout Cook County, providing residents with hunger-relief programming including food, resources, knowledge and skills to lead healthy, active lives. This includes providing:

  • Families with food
  • School children with summer meals
  • Connections to valuable resources such as SNAP dollars
  • Nutrition education and cooking classes to combat chronic illness
  • Groceries for homebound older adults

Beyond Hunger provides nutritional support through four distribution options: a drive-thru food pantry, a traditional in-person community market, an off-site monthly pop-up "Despensa" food pantry serving new immigrants and an expansive home delivery program for older adults and people with disabilities. Typically, families receive more than 70 pounds of fresh produce, lean meats and pantry staples – and all visitors are offered the chance to set up an appointment and work with a benefits coordinator to determine eligibility for income support programs like SNAP.
