While scenic views and winding roads might make for great Sunday-drive material, they hardly account for many motorists' day-to-day experiences, which, like auto insurance rates, vary wildly by state. Road conditions, repair costs, insurance premiums and uninsured motorists can all impact the enjoyment — or frustration — of driving.

To get a better grasp on where drivers have the best all-around experience, Carinsurance.com ranked each state on eight factors:

  • Insurance cost based on the percentage of annual income spent
  • Traffic fatalities
  • Costs associated with repairs needed because of road conditions
  • Traffic congestion
  • Gas prices
  • Percentage of roads in poor or mediocre condition
  • The number of uninsured drivers
  • Car repair costs, including both parts and labor

"It's important to note that no state aced or failed every metric — instead, states may perform well in one area and come near the bottom in another," Les Masterson, managing editor and insurance analyst for Carinsurance.com, said in a release.

California was once again the worst state for drivers due to high average gas prices, high repair costs, poor road conditions and traffic congestion problems, according to research from Carinsurance.com.
