For more than 130 years, motorcycles have embodied freedom, independence and the spirit of exploration. Just consider these words from the actor Dan Aykroyd of "Ghostbusters" fame: "You do not need a therapist if you own a motorcycle!"

But, like any piece of machinery, motorcycles come with risks, and those risks can translate into practical expenses for motorcycle lovers. "Motorcycle riders are over-represented in traffic fatalities," according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrative. Nearly 5,000 motorcyclists were killed in accidents in 2018, but only 71% of bikers reportedly wore helmets that year, the NHTSA says.
